ISO 17100 Translation Services Standard
ISO 17100 Translation Services Standard
The ISO 17100 Translation Services standard has completed its revision process, which began in 2011 without much publicity. The standard was prepared by ISO's TC 73 committee. The standard was based on the EN 15038 standard published in 2006. With the principle that standards should be revised every 5 years and that European and international standards should not repeat each other, ISO initiated work in 2011 and the standard was published in May 2015.
Quality Requirements and Measurements
ISO 17100 is a process standard and is primarily concerned with the translation process. The activities before and after the translation process are the main subject of this standard. It does not recommend or require any basic quality measurement. It links the provision of quality in translation to the steps and conditions defined in the translation process. In this sense, the translation office's ability to complete high quality projects is directly related to how well it defines the translation process.
In general, the steps to be taken in a translation project are described below;
- Translation, a translator who will check his own work.
- Revision, a person other than the translator to carry out the revision. This type of revision is an essential part of the process. The reviser will check the translation output, correct errors and ensure that it is fit for purpose.
- Revision is an optional stage, and the translation office can commission this stage if it so chooses. At this stage, the translation is checked for compliance with the purpose and scope of the translation and corrective measures are taken if necessary.
- Correction, This stage is also optional and involves editing activities before publication.
- Final Validation is also checked against the project specifications at this stage and then published.
