2053 Target

Turkey has pledged to make the country's carbon emissions Net Zero by 2053.

2053 Target

Turkey has pledged to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2053. While this is a commitment that Turkey has made on the international platform and will be regulated through policies, it will be a difficult endeavor to realize without the contributions of non-state actors.

Taking action for the climate

One of the most important factors for a significant reduction in carbon emissions is that government policies support this reduction. Policies are crucial to ensure system transformation and the transition of actors in the economy in activities related to carbon reduction.

One of the main elements that will guide/contribute the policy makers the most on climate change is standards. Standards will provide a perspective on both strategic and legal regulations in climate change. In addition, they can be used by the relevant parties as important tools in the formation and follow-up of targets.

This Turkey2053and beyond initiative has emerged as a convening platform for organizations/institutions taking action for climate change. It was created to help raise awareness and help policy makers commit to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions. The case studies here are designed to show how institutions and organizations have reduced their carbon emissions using standards, as well as to raise awareness about climate change and inspire other institutions.

Now is the time.

Implementation/enforcement of international and national standards at the institutional level accelerates participation in the Paris Agreement, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, United Nations Adaptation and Agility Movement.

Working together will help us achieve our goals more quickly and safely.

All problems can be solved faster and more effectively if people are willing to work together and take action to make it happen. The results will be dramatic, especially when this is realized at the national level and done in accordance with certain standards. Unity not only on what to do, but also on how to do it, will remove many uncertainties and make it easier for the parties working together.

This project was created as a platform where organizations that want to work together and strive to achieve the same goal can share their projects and present new approaches.

What We Want to Do

Turkey2053and beyond is an initiative launched with local and global organizations in Turkey to achieve the Net Zero commitment in collaboration with a neutral and independent certification body and climate association. This initiative is initiated and managed by Vericert Certification. Our main source of inspiration for starting this initiative is to bring together organizations that will contribute to Turkey’s Net Zero commitment and create a synergy and inspire other organizations.

By launching this initiative, we want to make progress and pioneer in 3 main areas. These are;

  • Measurement/Reporting
  • Projects and awareness
  • Innovation

Measurement/Reporting

To put forward an approach that is acceptable to all parties by setting out measurement and reporting methods.

Projects and awareness

Increasing information sharing and awareness through projects to be developed by institutions.

Innovation

The effective use of standards will expand the use of existing technology and enable innovative technologies

Where We Want to Be

The standards we create and implement today will show us where we will be in 2053.

Standards form the foundations of the real economy and play a critical role in the voluntary activities of organizations. The use of standards in making and implementing commitments will motivate and reassure governments that commitments are based on a strong foundation.

Effective use of standards will play an important role in achieving the net zero target. The use of ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System, ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Verification and Validation standards will make significant contributions to the net zero target.

Fundamentals

The use and maintenance of voluntary standards is an important tool for achieving climate goals.  Standards are currently not sufficiently used and utilized by states to achieve the net zero target. We see standards as a very important tool to be used for the net zero target. In fact, as we have seen this in different projects carried out on different occasions, we attach great importance to the effective use of these standards.

The scale of the economy that needs to transform its processes and structures with a new approach all over the world to reach the net zero target is quite large. For this reason, structures at all levels need to adapt to this transformation as quickly as possible and start using the relevant standards. There are many international standards for reducing carbon emissions. The effective use of these standards by institutions will contribute greatly to the realization of this commitment.

Project Studies

The case studies below include climate change-related projects carried out by organizations using international standards. Making the use of standards a national policy in relation to the net zero target will be an important driver in achieving this goal as soon as possible.
