Circular Economy
Circular Economy
The global economy is “linear” in that it is based primarily on extraction, production, use and disposal. This linear economy leads to resource depletion, biodiversity loss, waste and harmful losses and emissions, all of which together severely damage the planet’s capacity to continue to meet the needs of future generations. Moreover, many planetary limits have already been reached or exceeded.
There is a growing understanding that the transition to a more circular economy based on the circular use of resources can contribute to meeting current and future human needs (well-being, shelter, nutrition, health, mobility, etc.). The transition to a circular economy can also contribute to creating and sharing more value in society and among interested parties, while renewing and replenishing natural resources and managing them sustainably can ensure the quality and resilience of ecosystems.
Organizations recognize the many potential reasons to engage in the circular economy (e.g. providing more ambitious and sustainable solutions; improving relationships with interested parties; more effective and efficient ways of meeting voluntary commitments or legal requirements; engaging in climate change mitigation or adaptation; managing the risks of resource scarcity, increasing resilience in environmental, social and economic systems) and at the same time contributing to meeting human needs.
The ISO 59000 family of standards is designed to harmonize the understanding of the circular economy and support its implementation and measurement.
The ISO 59014 standard provides principles, requirements and guidance for any organization wishing to recover secondary materials. When you look at the content of the standard;
